Building for the Future at NVCC-Connecting People. Creating Community.

There’s a lot happening at Newark Valley Community Connection right now—and not all of it is happening inside the buildings!

First, a reminder that our Rummage Sale is tomorrow, Saturday, September 26, from 9 AM–3 PM at the Community Hall. Come browse, find a bargain and maybe take home something you didn’t know you needed! The funds raised will help support building maintenance and future projects at NVCC.

If you have walked by our buildings lately, you may have noticed some construction taking place!

A little more of the story behind the construction

One of the projects underway right now is the new doors and deck off the Community Hall. The new doors and deck being added to the Community Hall are exciting for several reasons. The deck will provide a second means of exiting the building, which is important as the Community Hall continues to be used for more meals, classes, events and gatherings.

The new openings will also eventually make it possible to get a commercial-size refrigerator into the kitchen—something that will make a big difference as our community meals and events continue to grow.

And there’s a bigger vision behind it.

Someday, this deck and entrance will become part of a connecting walkway or enclosed hall between the Community Hall and our Event Center. So what may look like a simple construction project right now is actually one small piece of a much larger vision and plan for the property.

We’re especially grateful to the Tioga Downs Regional Community Foundation, Mildred Faulkner Truman Foundation, and The Community Foundation for South Central New York for contributing toward this project. Their support is helping turn an idea into something the community will be able to use for years to come.

There’s still plenty of work ahead. One of our larger upcoming needs is a new heating system for the Event Center. The current furnace is aging, and replacing it will be a significant investment. Keeping these buildings heated, maintained and insured is a major part of what it takes to keep the doors open—and to keep providing space for the community.

And there’s always something happening at NVCC!

While work continues on the buildings, the calendar keeps moving too:

Coffee Cafe? Something New on Monday Mornings?

We’re talking about opening the Community Hall on Monday mornings for a casual coffee time—a place to stop in, grab a cup of coffee or tea, use the Wi-Fi, bring your laptop, catch up with someone, or simply sit and visit for a while.

The idea is simple: you don’t have to have a meeting or an event to have a reason to come through our doors. Southern Tier Network has generously offered to sponsor these mornings, AND have a representative there to help explain internet options.

We’re still working out the details, but we’d love to create a regular Monday morning gathering where there’s always a seat at our table.

Line Dancing — Thursday, October 1 at 6:30 PM Come out, learn some steps and have some fun. No experience necessary!

Live Stream Yoga & Tea — Tuesdays at 10:15 AM Our regular Tuesday morning yoga continues.

Monday Lunch-October 12 11:30 AM to 1:00 PM A special thank you to Jennifer from NBT Bank for joining us recently and sharing helpful information about recognizing scams and keeping ourselves safe. We appreciate her taking the time to help our community stay informed!

Paranormal Investigation Class — October 17 5:00 PM: Learn more about the tools, techniques and experiences involved in paranormal investigations from Cheryl Orton Stevens, who is generously donating her time for this event. Donations appreciated to help cover costs for our Haunted Halls.

Haunted Halls — October 23 & 24 One of our biggest events of the year is coming back! Our volunteers are already working behind the scenes to get everything ready.

Organ Concert — Sunday, November 1 A beautiful afternoon of music in our Event Center.

Volunteer Spotlight: Marsha

NVCC wouldn’t be what it is without the people who give their time, energy and creativity to make things happen.

This month’s volunteer spotlight is Marsha.

Marsha grew up in the area and graduated from Dryden High School before attending Syracuse University, where she studied Fine Art. After spending several years between North Carolina, Washington, DC and New York City, she returned to the area in 2022 and quickly fell in love with Newark Valley’s “Stars Hollow” energy—that quirky, welcoming small-town spirit that makes a community feel like home.

As a Community Connection board member and regular volunteer, Marsha teaches metalsmithing classes, helps in the kitchen and brings a little theatrical mischief to our murder mysteries and other events.

She’s passionate about supporting local businesses and creating opportunities for people to learn new skills, explore their creativity and connect with one another.

Marsha is helping build the kind of community space where people can gather, make things, try something new and feel at home.

And that really is what all of these projects, programs and events are about.

The doors, deck, blacktop and future heating project are important—but what makes them worthwhile is what happens inside these buildings.

Meals. Music. Classes. Dancing. Creativity. Laughter. New friendships. Old friends catching up.

A place where people can come together.

Connecting people. Creating community.
