Finding Connection in the Heart of Winter

At Newark Valley Community Connection, this month is full of ways to gather, connect, and feed the soul right alongside the stomach. Because let’s be honest—winter is a whole lot easier when we’re not doing it alone.

 Why Gathering Matters

Between cold weather and the unsettling news many of us have watched unfold across the country—it’s easy to feel worn down or disconnected.

In a world that moves fast and often feels chaotic, taking time to sit with neighbors, try something new, or share a meal can be surprisingly powerful. Conversation can turn into friendship. A shared laugh turns into belonging. Even just getting out of the house for an hour can lift spirits more than we expect. We believe in the importance and healing power of community—of being known, seen, and supported by neighbors right here at home.

That’s exactly what our February events are all about—community, comfort, and a little joy sprinkled in.

Sunday Brunch — February 1 | 11:00 am–1:00 pm

Start the month the best way we know how: around the brunch table.

We’ll be serving pancakes, ham, bacon, a variety of quiches, cheesy potatoes, and plenty of baked goods. Whether you come with family, friends, or just bring your appetite, you’ll leave full in more ways than one.

Tea & Live Stream Yoga with Lindsey — Tuesdays in February | 10:15 am Donations Appreciated

Warm tea. Gentle movement.

Join Lindsey, a certified yoga and fitness instructor with experience in studios, rehabilitation and behavioral hospitals, and with veterans through the Operation Red Wings Foundation. These sessions are designed to be accessible and welcoming, with guided chair and floor movement options so everyone can participate comfortably. It’s not about being able to touch your toes—it’s about feeling better in your body and enjoying community right here in Newark Valley.

Beginner Line Dancing — February 5 & 19 | 6:30 pm

No experience? Perfect. Two left feet? Even better.

Red’s Line Dancing continues to bring the fun to our hardwood dance floor for beginner-friendly lessons where a good time is guaranteed. It’s lighthearted, energizing, and a great excuse to move during the winter months. Suggested donation: $5

Sip & Paint with Nerissa — February 8 | 2:00 pm

Need a cozy creative afternoon? This is it.

All materials are provided—just bring your creativity (and maybe a friend). Painting, sipping, and relaxing together is a wonderful way to unwind and let the winter stress melt away.

Suggested donation: $30

Community Monday Lunch — February 9

Nothing says comfort like a homemade meal shared with neighbors. This month we’re serving baked ziti, salad, and dessert. Pull up a chair, catch up with friends, and enjoy a warm plate and warm company.

Community Lasagna Dinner Fundraiser — February 15 | 2:00 pm

Join as the community comes together in support of Jared Martin. A shared meal has always been one of the ways our community shows love and care in hard times. Your presence makes a difference. **Due to IRS Rules, this event is sponsored by local community members and not an official NVCC Event.

1970s Murder Mystery Dinner — February 28

Peace, love… and a little mystery.

Our wildly popular Murder Mystery Dinner is back with a groovy 1970s theme. Enjoy an evening of murder, mystery, and mayhem along with a delicious dinner of Chicken Francaise over pasta, vegetables, garlic rolls, salad, and dessert.

Costumes are encouraged, laughter is inevitable, and reservations are required.

 Come As You Are

*You don’t have to be new. You don’t have to know anyone. You don’t have to stay long.

*Just come.

*February can be a tough month, but sharing a meal, a laugh, a dance, or a quiet cup of tea reminds us that we’re part of something bigger. And connection that’s good for the soul.

We can’t wait to see you at Newark Valley Community Connection.
